“There are a LOT of true crime podcasts out there, and many of them are solid, entertaining, and informative. But almost without exception, they lean HEAVILY into the sensationalist aspects of murder.
That’s where The Consult is different: this feels more like a seminar on criminal profiling, and I mean that in the best possible way. You get to see how the proverbial sausage gets made with the help of actual profilers and former profilers who quickly prove themselves to be sober, competent, thoughtful, and perhaps most importantly, able to admit when the theory is underdetermined by the evidence or even completely breaks down.
I am kind of amazed that this exists, but having listened to it, I’m just as amazed that it didn’t exist until now.”
