Sets itself apart in a crowded field
Let's face it, there are roughly eleventy billion actual play podcasts out there. Many are good, some are meh, and a few stand out above the crowd. I've listened to several and the Critshow is one of the best. The guys explain and demonstrate enough of the game mechanics that it can help you learn how to play if you never have before, but ultimately the focus is on working together to tell a really great story - one that you'll enjoy even if you have no experience with or even interest in tabletop RPGs. The Keeper, Rev, does an excellent job of letting the story go exactly where the dice dictate, even if that takes something he thought he had planned and throws it right out the window. Giving in fully to this element of randomness is *the* key to what makes the story play out so beautifully. Players Tass, Jake, and Teej have created captivating characters who are vulnerable and flawed and who will have you rooting for them every second of the journey. In addition to lots of hearty laughs, I've also gasped, shrieked, and even shed tears throughout their journey. Do yourself a favor and give this a listen (but be sure to start from the beginning)!Read full review »
