“Mr Bushman’s The Dark Ages is the spiritual successor to THoR and Mike Duncan. Full. Stop.
His approach to the Dark Ages contains the same type of historical accuracy, detail, tongue-in-cheek humour and humility but spiced with his very own flavour. His approach to history is similar in covering the highlights while using the (much more limited!) sources available to flesh-out the societies and people involved in an incredibly accessible way. He approaches each of the many so-far-covered successors of Rome on their own terms, gives them a fair shake, and positions them in the history and narrative in a way that recognizes their successes as polities. He avoids the old trope of these kingdoms being derivative or destined to fail/has-beens, instead framing them as the relevant, impactful and transitional groups that they were without over-stating their impact/role. In doing-so he has changed my perspective on them and brought them to life in a way none of the other excellent podcasts (see below) have been able to pull off.
Frankly I can’t wait to see where this goes and I really truly hope he keeps going, and filling the Mike Duncan sized hole in my podcast-life with his own special blend of history.
Not sure what I’m trying to say below but I’m leaving it because I really want to highlight how special this podcast is and have a list to reference whenever anyone asks me what they should listen to.
I’m an avid history podcast listener after being introduced to The History of Rome on a cross America roadtrip in 2013. Since then I’ve been a nonstop subscriber and am fully caught up on History of Rome (now on my 3rd listen), Revolutions (RIP), the History of Byzantium, History of the Crusades/Reconquista, The British History Podcast, The Fall of Rome/Tides of History, The History of England, The Age of Napoleon, The French History, and the Nations of Canada to mention the best of the best. This podcast is as good as any of them (if not better) than all except for maybe (maybe!) Patrick Wyman’s The Fall of Rome/Tides of History and the Nations of Canada. This is not to downplay any of the other great podcasts on this list, just to recognize how good TDA has been since day 1.
To Mr Bushman: Thanks for doing this whole podcast thing. It’s not easy, but I hope reviews like this make it more worthwhile. The only improvement I’d suggest is the cover art - which I have no leg to stand on regarding quality but just doesn’t quite fit the excellence of the podcast itself.”
