To All Prospective Viewers. This is potentially the best history podcast I have ever watched. While most podcasts trudge their way through with loads of sources or rely entirely on one or two, the Dark Ages Podcast finds a way to do it all with so little. Scrounging together modern and olden...Read full review »

The calm, coherent and conversational transfer of vast swaths of historical knowledge is a delight. Give yourself a break from contemporary history and reap the benefit of an amateur historian’s lifetime of research and reflection.

My podcasts run towards history pods—David Crowther’s “History of England,” Dan Carlin’s “Hardcore History,” Patrick Wyman’s “Tides of History.” This is a great addition to those podasts in my subscriber list. Dry humor, the occasional pun, interesting digressions, all work to flesh out an era...Read full review »

Great podcast covering the often confusing period that are the Dark Ages/early Medieval age. Well researched, well delivered, and very entertaining.

Found this late last year and binged the entirety of content in a month. Completely hooked. History given without bias, with scrupulous detail and done so in a relatable, non “ivory tower” manner. From one very thankful listener in Melbourne, Australia. Keep up the amazing work.

Hey, love the podcast. I love your cynicism and sense of humor as well as the obviously well researched sense of a grand story. My favorite episodes are on specific subjects such as war etc. They give a nice break from the narrative. 5 stars! Hope this podcast blows up like the history of Rome did!

As someone who does extensive research of antiquity in Europe/Mediterranean/Near East, I have found HB’s telling of this often confusing and chaotic point in time to be enjoyable and informative. I appreciate the creativity and hard work out into this show. I love the variety of storytelling...Read full review »

I came here at the recommendation of Apple’s “since you listened to feature”which in my case was Prof Robert Allison’s Revolution 250 commemorating the 250 Anniversary on the Boston Tea Party this year. Did not know very much about this time period. Your show is deeply absorbing. I have been...Read full review »

I listen to many podcasts about this period from varied perspectives, this podcast is among the best if not THE best. The tone is balanced, the information is in depth and his deadpan humor is absolutely hilarious!!!! I highly recommend this podcast!!!!!

I learned a lot from this one, and I was also triggered to do some additional research. It strikes the perfect balance between painting a broad picture and serving up some great in-depth analysis. I’m now at episode 18, but I will keep listening, no doubt!

A very good podcast. He covers the history of the Dark Ages pretty well though he could focus somewhat more on areas outside the empire and Mauritania, which is generally poorly covered. Has a similar voice and energy to Ben Jacobs of Wittenberg to Westphalia.

What a wonderful show! Heard about it on one of the three dozen other history podcasts I regularly listen to, and immediately got engrossed in it. Smart, informative, and funny. And there was a reference to Dr Who! Cracked me up in the context of the Dark Ages. Definitely worth a listen.

Mr Bushman’s The Dark Ages is the spiritual successor to THoR and Mike Duncan. Full. Stop. His approach to the Dark Ages contains the same type of historical accuracy, detail, tongue-in-cheek humour and humility but spiced with his very own flavour. His approach to history is similar in covering...Read full review »

How is it that more people aren’t talking about this show? It’s fun, witty, and informative. If I had friends I would definitely tell them about it . My only complaint is that now that I have binged listened (?) I have wait for the next one

I love in particular the history of the Ostrogoths (as a kid I read Felix Dahn’s “Ein Kampf um Rom”, and Ravenna is one of my favorite places in Italy). The author’s dry sense of humor adds spice to the narrative.

One I go to first to see if there’s a new one. After re-re-re-listening to History of Rome this picks up the story perfectly. I love the laid backness and humor and his read is great. Very engaging.

Narrator has a good sense of humor which he intersperses with the history. He has a good pace so it is never boring. Plus the 30 min length is perfect for a 3 mile run.

Great show! I just started listening and am currently on episode 4. Narrated by a stud this podcast scratches an itch left by the long pauses from hardcore history. Big fan!
