“I got through the first episode convinced that the satanism-centered exposition was just to get the listener interested and that eventually the host would explain the pitfalls and fallacies behind the satanic panic of the 80s and talk more about mental health and the actual details of this incredibly sad story, and the impact it had on the family and community. But by the time I got to the end of the first episode where he continued to refer to heavy metal and rock music as being part of the reason Tommy’s personality changed, and where the police officer was talking about how they had to guard Tommys funeral because “Satanists” we’re gonna try and claim the boys body and the host didn’t even dismiss or call out this problematic comment? That’s when I realized he was actually INVESTED in the idea of satanic panic. Which was startling to me. It’s the year 2021. If you are still buying into that nonsense and not even entertaining the idea that the panic was a ridiculous, fear-driven attempt to center Christianity and morality and demonize the fact that there was a big cultural shift occurring at the time- I just don’t trust your “investigation” or “reporting”. Won’t be finishing this show. And can’t articulate enough how dangerous it is to lump mental illness with demonic possession/worship, etc. 🙄”
