“The narrator was great and the story held my interest, but it’s not true crime. There’s a true crime story at its base, but the rest is simply made up. What was needed was experts talking about what really happened to Tommy and how many innocent people have suffered at the hands of the “satanic panic” movement. In my opinion, the way the story was told only served to revive that panic in some ways.
In the Bible, all mental illness was considered demonic possession. We are smarter than that now. The idea that Tommy was possessed by a demon is so very damaging to those who struggle with mental illness and actually, to Tommy and his mother. Tommy had a psychotic break and the fallout was horrific, but good god, he spawned a demon? C’mon.”
