SUMMARY:Dr John Watson, a British army Surgeon, recounts his experience in the army, serving in the 2nd Afghan war. He was shot at and spend a very long time recovering before he was sent back to England for medical reasons. Watson stays in a hotel in London, living more lavishly that he should have, and reasons that he needs to find a cheaper place to live. He runs into a man call Stamford, a former colleague from Medical School. Stamford, when he learns that Watson is looking for a new place to live, says that he knows an eccentric student type who is looking for a roommate.Stamford takes Watson to the medical laboratory to the man, Sherlock Holmes. Holmes shocks Watson by immediately pointing out that he has been in Afghanistan. Holmes laughs off Watson’s attempt at asking how he knew that and instead shares his discovery of a chemical reagent that will help identify blood stains on criminals. After Stamford mentions the lodgings situation, Holmes explains that he has found a great apartment in Baker Street, and then goes on to explain his own shortcomings to Watson; Watson explains his too. The two then agree to meet on the following day to look at the apartments. As they leave, Watson asks Stamford how it was that Holmes knew he was in Afghanistan. Stamford only responds that Holmes is peculiar.
