SUMMARY:
Elizabeth can think of nothing but her interactions with Lady Catherine, and her mind turns over with thoughts of Mr. Darcy’s feelings for her. She eventually concludes that the speculation must have come to Lady Catherine through the Collins’ imagination after hearing about Jane’s engagement to Bingley.
The next morning Elizabeth is invited to follow her father into his library. He is holding a letter and at first, she believes it to be from Lady Catherine, telling him too to refuse any proposal from Darcy. He then goes on to explain to her that the letter tells him that he should congratulate her for a potential engagement of her own and explains that the letter is from Mr Collins. Mr Bennet then goes to read the letter allowed, and while poking fun at Lizzy, he eventually goes to joke at Mr. Collins believing that Mr Darcy will be proposing to her. He laughs out loud at this, believing Elizabeth to still dislike and even hate Darcy. Elizabeth tries to laugh with him, hoping that her father will not see through her, but she really does wish that her father didn’t laugh at the idea of her marrying Darcy.
