SUMMARY:
Watson tries to rest but his mind is too focus on the mystery to let him sleep. Later, Holmes comes in with a newspaper and shows him the "found" section, where a little article about a missing ring in the brixton road has been put, saying to contact Dr John Watson for more information. Holmes gives Watson a fake ring, and expects the murderer to come later that day to get his property. While they wait, Holmes receives a telegram that informs him that his ideas about the case are true. He doesn't however tell Watson what these are. Shortly after 8pm an old lady comes by and claims that the ring is her daughters. Watson hands over the ring and asks a few questions about her and her daughter. When woman leaves, Holmes quickly grabs his coat and follows her. Hours later, he returns defeated, and with a laugh tells Watson that the woman hailed a cab, and called out her address when she got into it. Holmes followed by hanging from the back of the cab. When he arrived at the location given however, the woman was nowhere to be seen. She or as Holmes claims, the murderer, he, must have jumped from the cab unseen by the driver or Holmes, knowing that he was being followed.
