“I'm not too familiar with the fall of the Roman Empire (apart from the broad strokes that I learned in middle school social studies), and Patrick Wyman gets into amazing depth about it. In addition to a straightforward (but compelling) recitation of facts, Wyman also uses an approach of focusing on a hypothetical (fictional, but specific) Goth, in order to explain who the Goths (a disparate group of many different peoples and identities) might have been based on the best evidence available. This approach mirrors that of Professor Robert Garland of Colgate University, whose Great Courses lecture series "The Other Side of History" tells the story of ancient peoples not through the eyes of "great men", but rather through the eyes of a single, hypothetical average person. Apart from making his hypothetical Goth survive through a massive period of upheaval, Wyman depicts him otherwise as an ordinary man, whose story brings the Fall of Rome to compelling life through an uncommon perspective. The first episode's delivery is a little shaky, as this is clearly Wyman's first podcast rodeo - but he finds his feet quickly, and the material is well-written. He also does a good job of briefly recapping at the beginning of each episode, so you don't have to perfectly recall every single thing he has ever said. Definitely my new favorite, and a welcome distraction from the election.”Read full review »

“This is already the kind of podcast I'll be eagerly tracking as each episode is released. Looking forward for the narrative and the podcast itself to develop over the next few weeks.”Read full review »
