Episode 4: All about poo Part 1: Understanding Constipation
Listen now
Description
Poo. We all pass stool, faeces, a “number 2” or a “big one”. There is so much to say about this topic, hence, be prepared for this two part series where Sandra and Wagdy kick things off by discussing the importance of paying attention to our bowel movements and using the Bristol stool chart to monitor them. What is a normal poo? What is not normal? What are poo colours that warrant a visit to your doctor? They answer these questions in great detail before moving on to one of the most common gut complaints and that is constipation.  Both Wagdy and Sandra go through the definition of constipation and the most common causes. When can constipation land you in A&E? You’ll learn about the warning signs and when to visit your doctor. They emphasise the importance of never resisting the urge to go, which can backfire. Wagdy also discusses the importance of a rectal exam and why you should not shy away from one if your specialist suggests it. Sandra then goes through her nutrition and lifestyle constipation toolbox, that includes the “big 6” modifications. She also highlights how increasing fibre may not be the right approach for one type of constipation. Wagdy briefly goes over common drugs to manage constipation and shares his opinion on colonics or colonic irrigation.  Sandra and Wagdy urge you to be vocal about any changes in your poo habits as breaking the taboo and overcoming any apprehension to seek help can very well save your life! And finally, they have both agreed to stop using the word “important” and are on a mission to expand their vocabulary.  Tune in next week for part 2, which will go through everything you need to know about diarrhea.
