Weaponisation of nostalgia ... but by who?
This was an attempt at a thoughtful podcast from leftist viewpoint, but it suffers from all of the current misunderstandings that plague left of centre policies. Contrary to Mr Alexander’s views, Brexit was driven by many things but one includes looking forward to a global trading future. The EU is an old fashioned protectionist bloc designed as solution to a 20th century problem. Moreover it is evidently failing in the 21st century. How many Americans would accept a non elected supranational body making laws and policy for them? When did such an idea become ‘modern’ or ‘global’? And why does the UK have to be ‘central to the global system’ , why just not be a successful in our own terms. We are not a superpower and won’t be. Get real. Ironically it’s the UK Left that can’t let go of the ideas of the UK’s status and empire. Joe Biden may be a better option than Trump , but he is no one’s saviour and there will be a serious counter reaction to some of the triumphalism and silliness on display just now. It’s time to get real if the Left is to survive. A serious discussion on Brexit and why Trump did so well that is not rooted in the presumptions and nostalgia of the current left would be helpful. The UK Labour Party has completely failed to do this post the loss of the Dec 2019 election just because it refuses to let go of long held nostalgic beliefs. Mr Alexander seems to be very much a part of this problem.

Yasha Mounk rules and I used to follow him on twitter before my suspension. He is very well rounded in that he seems to understand American as well as world issues. His accent and voice are so melodious that even my two kids will sit quietly and listen to him. They are not quiet children.

Mounk is my favorite. He’s a great interviewer. He’s a very rational, fair, and open-minded critical thinker. He questions beliefs, but not too much. He’s the best public intellectualism has to offer.
