“I love this podcast.
And, by the way, I am completely opposed to the right-wing movements ascendency now. I’m a democratic socialist.
But, really, Mounk seems to completely not understand how untenable his position is. He’s a winner in the system. His ivy-league credentials completely deprive him of any position to actually fight against fascism. He’s on the payroll of oligarchs. He’s the very sort of blind fool our university systems raise to the heights, where they only exacerbate populist resentments. I often think in my more paranoid moments that universities exist to coopt the resistance.
Here’s the thing. He gets his money from the oligarchic enterprise that is Harvard and positions himself against populist movements. Being a paid stooge of the oligarchy, he foolishly expects that he should do politics to others and is completely resentful when politics is done to him.
Hearing him talk about populism is like listening to some advanced Martian discussing the primitive life-forms on earth. I’m guessing (I could be wrong) that he has never dirtied his hands in actual retail politics. He opines (and very well!) but never realises that his elitist, isolated opining, honed for elitist university careerism but not for actual effect, is one reason that democracy is currently threatened.
Mounk is smart and fun to listen to, but the notion that this podcast is going to do anything other than raise his income (till the deluge, of course, when all bets are off) is laughable.
But, hell with it, the podcast is fun to listen to, and I wish Mounk well. His analyses are often quite interesting, even if they are dead ends.
Oh, well, to a man with a hammer, everything seems like a nail.”
