“As an art lover whose curiosity with art history came a bit later in life, Hessel’s varied outlets of art history hit me at a perfect time—just as I wanted to know so much more, while working past the limitations of patriarchal criticism and history-writing.
She shows a commitment to intersectionality in her feminism and an enthusiasm for each of her guests that instantly places them as equals in the white male cannon that has for so long excluded so many of them. In many cases she rightly and confidently places them above the old white dudes.
Each episode makes the listener feel as if they’re hearing the shortcomings of art history being corrected in real time—because that’s exactly what’s happening. Listen because it’s highly educational and entertaining, but also because this podcast and all of Katy Hessel’s works are history in the making themselves.
