“When I first wandered into the Groglands, I wasn’t sure what I was listening to. There was an odd noise seemingly from a distressed ogre and then rambling nostalgia about a roleplaying game I hadn’t ever given much time to beforehand. I nearly hit the unsubscribe button but I was busy doing something else and couldn’t reach the player. So it kept playing. And playing. And playing. A few weeks later and now I’m all caught up. Not just with the pod. But with the early days of the hobby.
All the games I had not played. Plus the big ones I had heard of. I lived it as they relived it on every episode. Plus that magazine! The White Dwarf I knew was already a glossy brochure for miniatures. We had Dragon and Dungeon magazine. Sadly both gone now. But their love for this old Games Workshop was infectious. Not the GW that milked every penny out of you for overpriced miniatures. But a gentler, more civilised GW that sold roleplaying games and introduced the hobby to British kids.
Many days I have listened to Dirk, Blithey, Ed and their many guests talk about their love for the hobby. I’ve heard them change and grow and embrace the new games as well as breathe life back into the old. Dirk’s enthusiasm is contagious. These are not just grognards poo pooing the new stuff for the old. Their love for the hobby doesn’t just stop with nostalgia. They bring their northern dullest tones and charm to everything.
I got a lot out of this pod. I’ve laughed a lot. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve spent a lot of time and some treasure digging into games I hadn’t considered before. I’ve also got a glimmer of a community that I didn’t even know existed.
Highly recommended for true roleplaying game fans.”
