Nostalgia is what it used to be!
I was born in the UK in the 70's, and my first extended brush with RPG spanned the 80's. If you're anything like me, welcome home, for this podcast will be right up your Apple Lane (that seemed quite clever when I wrote it, but I notice that half the reviews here reference said thoroughfare too). This is a podcast as welcoming and redolent of the old days as a can of quattro and a jacob's club biscuit. Admittedly, having Boltonian parents does make me more partial to Dirk the Dice's dulcet Lancastrian tones, but in any case he's an eloquent and likeable host, whose soothing voice serves as a gentle and avuncular guide into our own ruined past. The interviews take in many of the heavyweights of the rpg scene at the time. Especially interesting for me were the GW authors of rpg material from the days before Workshop and WD were, for better or worse, "Anselled". These voices genuinely offer a lot of fresh background information concerning their work. Our host's bantering on personal roleplaying experience with Judge Blythy is also fun and insightful, always raising some good chuckles of recognition for me. Most old oldschool gaming media, whether it be blog or podcast - seems to deal mainly with the nuts and bolts of gaming systems, miniatures, the advertising in WD, etc. Which, you know, is fine, but there's a wider picture surely? So where this podcast really shines for me is the further context it sets out. The most recent offering (at time of writing) looks at the influence of the UK's Robin of Sherwood television show on rpg culture. There should be much more discussion of gaming as both reflection of influence on the culture of its time, I feel. It matters to me that I painted my first Perry Twins troll whilst listening to Nik Kershaw, and that Scargill was bellowing into a megaphone in the 6 o'clock news. The idea of couching stories of the rpg experience within context of what we heard on the radio or saw on our 4 channels of telly is a great one, and I hope it'll be exploited further. Dirk and co have done a cracking job, and I savour these wallows in full-on nostalgia. Those truly were the days, my friends!Read full review »

More reviews of The GROGNARD Files
I happened across this podcast one day on Twitter and thought I'd just have a quick listen as I used to play RPG's back in the 80's. I was hooked from the start, Dirks style of delivery and the genuine love that he and his co-hosts Blythy and Ed have for the games is simply...Read full review »

Now, you may say that because I am from Oop North, I'd be biased towards any kind of blog, podcast or even a dice roll made by a fellow countryman. But, given that I am from 'The Shire'and the chaps at the Grognad Files are from over the border in 'Mordor', I don't think...Read full review »
