“If you have ever taken a guided trek through untamed Amazon or walked up Everest with the help of a sherpa, you would appreciate the value of your guide not just for their intimate knowledge of the terrain and of the practicalities of survival but just as importantly for their emotional and psychological support. Chris, coming across as very humble and self-deprecating, is such a world-class guide. Chinese history is not the most accessible to an English-speaking audience, and even to native Chinese speakers the sheer volume of information (thanks to China's lengthy and awesome record-keeping) can become forbiddingly daunting very quickly. Chris achieves the near-impossible by providing a sense of wonder to the audience and yet lightening up the intensity of those wonders with a familiar sense of (western) humor. Yes some of the jokes are corny, but those who say they have never told a corny joke probably have never told a joke at all. Bravo to Chris for a job well done. I can't wait to hear the next episode!”Read full review »
