If you’ve been following the Intimate Lifestyle for some time now, you might recall an episode I’ve had with transwoman, Rianna James, where we talked about the changes she went through and society's reception to her transition. Joining me on this episode is Kai Scott, a transman – and we pretty much delved on the same themes as I did with Rianna, though at the flipside.
Kai was born with a female body but knew early on that he enjoyed hanging out with boys more and wanted to be one too. My questions are out of curiosity and a need to understand the process, from the physical, emotional and even mental aspect of it. Kai works as a social scientist and this allowed him to provide more insights on issues surrounding gender and understanding it. As the co-founder of Transfocus, Kai helps workplaces and communities to create a more inclusive society for transpeople.
We skimmed some subjects and deep-dived on some allowing us to cover various points on our conversation such as:
What he does as a social scientist for the mining sector and how it impacts indigenous communities. (05:01) Going through the transition on a professional point of view. (06:29; 10:29) The concept of two-spirit identity and multiplicity of genders and roles in indigenous communities. (07:32) The costs/downside of being a part of the male population. (14:21) The changes in his behavior and emotions after transitioning due to the modification of hormones. (17:54) The difference between growing up as a girl or as a boy. (33:00) Finding out and coming out, and the ways he responded and dealt with questions about his sexuality. (37:58) The turning point that drove him to transition into becoming a man, the physical changes, and what chest-warmers are. (46:39) Being identified as a man sexually and adapting to male mannerisms and behaviors. (51:20) Setting structure, finding balance in, and understanding gender in a systems way. (57:14) Understanding gender dysphoria and how transpeople can bridge certain gaps in society. (1:11:36) Statistics surrounding gender, the three waves, and the debate on how transitioning should be done at various points in a child/person's life. (1:20:42)
If you want to learn more about his transition, and the work he is doing on the field of gender studies, specifically transgendered individuals, check out Kai on YouTube or reach out to him through TransFocus.
Also, check out the book The Essential Difference by Simon Baron-Cohen. It’s one of the books I read about gender differences.
