Good stuff
As someone with no relationship to USAmerican Christian subculture, The Magnificast is endlessly fascinating. It's half ethnography, and half faith and practice. Dean and Matt welcome the listener into their conversations and into their lives in an easy, friendly way. I got hooked because of the episode on Mennonite residential schools. I found it immediately useful as my own Meeting figures out how to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Outside of this episode, the podcast has focused on a very specific American context. That said, Dean is Catholic, Matt is Wesleyan, and the podcast has a good ecumenical spirit. It finds strength in its (properly historicized) specificity. Some things the show has mentioned that I'm excited to get further into: learning from the historical and current violences of Christianity; exploring the tension between Christian idealism and a materialist understanding of history; and materialist analysis of Christian institutions. My only warning to the would-be listener is: you'll regret any time you spend googling Rob Dreher or Joel Osteen.Read full review »
