Interesting idea, poorly executed
I was initially very interested to hear this story. However, I left disappointed because; - the interviewer skirts difficult questions and never has Nuttall uncomfortable which leaves me thinking he is one of Nuttal’s influential mates. - Nuttal is condescending and smug throughout the podcast and completely unrepentant and minimises everything, continuously playing the victim. This consistent attitude probably created a rod for his back and is why he got long sentences. - one would assume Nuttall is a reasonably intelligent man, he worked in a bank and got to be a Cabinet minister, so he knows about the importance of systems, processes and details. Yet he talks to us like we are dumbasses, throwing out simple lines expecting us to believe him, ‘like I just forgot to put something on the register’. He keeps referring to the ‘loan’ yet he and the interviewer never reference how much of the ‘loan’ was repaid by he and his children. I assume they could have just showed their bank statements with loan repayments. Obviously it was a payment not a loan. - he had been investigated previously for inappropriate/corrupt behaviour at Westpac, he is a guy with a history in this area but so much arrogance he thought he could get away with it. - Nuttall spent a number of years in prison yet makes the statement, “I think they call it a shiv” - I think most of us know what a shiv is and we haven’t been to jail, this is him trying to convey a ‘poor innocent me’ profile. - Nuttall seems so used to corruption he was shocked that Premier Beattie did not kept his indiscretions quiet and get him off the hook. Beattie had no choice but to pass the information onto the appropriate body and let them handle it, plus - Nuttall goes on about terms like ‘loyalty’ being upfront and bags out Beattie but he, and the interviewer never mention that Nuttall initiated a leadership spill to oust Beattie so he could become Deputy Premier, but the then Deputy rejected it as she likely knew Nuttall would be gunning for her next. - He is now dismissive of the political and justice systems even though he was senior minister and never did anything to improve them when he was in power, and did a lousy job as Minister of Health and was forced to resign. He even rubbishes the new ACT Integrity Commission. Nuttall comes across as an ‘old school’ businessman/politican used to getting his way and operating under the table with immunity, but now shocked this is no longer tolerated. I waiver between thinking he is either a smart man trying to deceive us or a not smart man who is genuinely shocked that his corrupt ways are no longer tolerated. Because of his arrogance and obtuseness I really think he is not that smart. He had an opportunity to take an 18 month sentence but chose to fight it and has paid a very high price. I do feel for him and how much time he spent in jail.

Not sure regarding guilt or innocence, but this is such an interesting listen. I think I could listen to Gordon wax lyrical for hours

I remember when this all went down and thought how unfair and unjust the system is when a white collar crime gets more for time than serious & heinous crimes. It was time for a scapegoat & the government had theirs for it was time to show they were tough on crime. The crime didn’t warrant...Read full review »

This man may have had a harsh sentence but he comes across as very self pitying and unaware of his immense privilege in life. “I just wanted to buy my kids houses” don’t we all mate?
