“I’ve enjoyed this podcast b/c the hosts are upfront about the fact that they’re still learning and episodes, like the Matthew McConaughey one, demonstrate both allyship in practice and in the interview follow-up a willingness to learn.
However, this latest episode felt self-congratulatory and reminiscent of “not all men”. Liz needed another woman there b/c it felt like she was slotted into the “women’s perspective” chair and was not truly being listened to.
In the interview follow-up: They laud Liz Plank for providing the data to back her thoughts but don’t take the next step of questioning why she had to bring the data to back her thoughts and they don’t feel the need to come equally as prepared.
I wish the hosts could break out of these roles: Liz - the expert on women and all issues related to gender, Jamey - the black guy’s perspective, & Justin - the nice, almost bumbling white guy and show more nuance but perhaps that will come with time as the show matures.
I do appreciate that the podcast doesn’t shy away or edit out “uncomfortable” conversations but usually they wrap up with recognizes the issues of the episode and they just really missed the mark this time.”
