Real Japanese Listening for Post-beginners & Beyond
Miku sensei is a highly talented Japanese teacher and these podcasts are a fantastic resource for post-beginners & intermediate level learners. The content, which is varied and interesting, is presented in a lighthearted and friendly tone but deeper, more serious subjects are tackled too,'Ichigo Ichie' in podcast no.3 for example. This makes for a striking contrast and crucially, a learning experience which is memorable. Miku sensei facilitates comprehension by maintaining a pace of speaking which is slower than native level and also by ensuring pronunciation is super clear; her guest interviewees such as Ryoma san in podcast no. 2 adopt this style too. As a result, I was delighted to find that I can often distinguish words that I already know from words that I need to learn by listening to these podcasts. For the record I worked in the Kansai region of Japan over 20 years ago. Through self-study I reached a reasonable level of Japanese, which was enough to pass the first two official language proficiency tests, but was never comfortable in conversation with native speakers. I attribute this to the fact that the textbooks I used to study were in the formal style. After returning home to Europe I switched over to learning French, then Spanish and even Czech but again never managed to progress from that post-beginner or lower intermediate level in any of them. After discovering Miku sensei's videos on YouTube I was inspired to return to learning Japanese. Her emphasis on *real* Japanese means that each lesson or podcast helps to fill in the many gaps in my knowledge by providing insight into how Japanese is spoken in practice. Thanks to Miku sensei I have greater confidence that I might actually be able to level up. Looking forward to the next podcast!Read full review »
