“I am just finally getting to catch up on all your Podcasts today, and love them! I have read & reread most of your blog articles, and most of your books, and love every time I am challenged to address a new area of my life. Minimalism makes so much sense in every area of life, & I have been so thrilled with the decision to make the life change.
I am really excited that you are starting to address more on minimalism with kids! That was a challenge when I first found your blog. It’s definitely a lot different than single life.
I wanted to share a couple of things I’ve done in my minimalism journey that may help others. One project I took on last year was going digital with all my photos. It was challenging and lengthy, but totally worth it. I couldn’t bear to throw most of them in the garbage when I was done, so I sorted them into piles of the people in the photos and mailed them out with a note for the recipients to enjoy and then discard if they would like. We have enjoyed some great moments of reminiscing and even reconnecting with people I haven’t talked to in years.
As for helping your kids declutter, I made a bargain with my daughter (age 8) when it came time to address the chaos of her bedroom. (This was after I had her buy-in to the idea of minimal living, which is a necessary part of our family running successfully). I wanted her to give up 1/2 of her possessions, and in turn, she could choose one experience. We talked through options like a trip to Washington DC, amusement parks visits, etc., and she chose gymnastics lessons. So far the trade off has been amazing, and she has no regrets!”
