The Psychology of Money made more accessible and personable, but it still has room to grow
It’s really nice to hear the voice of The Psychology of Money. Even though the book is great, it’s hard to compare how much more relatable it is to hear these ideas spoken to reading it all off of a page. I love how accessible it is and I’m excited to start recommending it to my friends who otherwise wouldn’t pick up the book. The only thing that would make this better for me if Morgan included more quotes from women and people with more underrepresented identities. It’s unfortunate how gendered the space of economics and personal finances tends to be in our society, and part of this issue come from the perception that most of the money experts that have advice worth listening to are men. It’s clear that a lot of research goes into finding these quotes, but it’s hard to believe that there is nobody with a underrepresented identity in finances or economics that doesn’t have something valuable to think about. Money affects everybody, not just the John D. Rockefeller's or the Vanderbilt’s, and painting a more inclusive picture of the people who handle money and have trustworthy knowledge about money is incredibly important for both individuals and the collective good. One of the main theses of The Psychology of Money is that there are certain widely-observed human tendencies that influence how we interact with money, but the people that Morgan often uses to demonstrate these ideas aren’t always very representative of the wide array of people that are affected.Read full review »
