The Myth That Is True!
If you are the guy or gal who gets frustrated in church adult ed or Sunday School because the teacher is following the well-worn path, mailing it in, constricted by training, just plain doesn't get the joy of the thing, whatever -- you need to listen to this podcast! If you are bored with scripture, have been lead to believe you know it all, you NEED to get this podcast! I met Mike a couple of years ago at ETS and let him know that there was a tiny contingent of fanboys over in the Lutheran sphere who were really looking forward to the official version of his book (now out as Unseen Realm), then ran into him again at this last year’s gathering and he interviewed me. But even if those things never happened, I would still have to endorse this podcast. Mike and Trey have a wonderful rapport which lets Mike do his thing which is get the hay out of the scholarly loft onto the barn floor where we cows can get at it (credit to Pr. Barnhouse for that analogy). On this show, they tackle the stuff you never get to hear about on your average Sunday rotation. A whole study on Leviticus and you never go into a coma. Amazing! That says much about what’s going on here; the premise of the show is to take the Bible in its immediate cultural context as the divine-human endeavor that it is and to hear it and see it, as much as possible, from the perspective of those first recipients, eschewing what came after. By way of a thought experiment, this has some really significant results and can even shed light on and bring value to things we practice as Christians today. Now, being a Lutheran, I’m a creeds and confessions guy, but I find a great deal of value in challenging those hard won statements of faith. Sometimes, by challenging them, I find I really haven’t understood them. I also find out that they are more spot on than I thought. It makes sense because the whole enterprise has an object, the Scriptures; the Lutheran Reformers were working with (mostly) the same material and at a very high level. My suggestion is to first go and view the three start-up videos on the site to see some of the base premises you will be working with as you listen. Got to NakedBiblePodcastDotCom and click on “New? We are so, so blessed that the renowned scholar actually cares for the lay person and takes the time to pass on the truth, not the politically correct. Mike, you are a blessing.

Mike does not give us a dumbed down lesson. Great content! I appreciate he does not teach from a denominational bias.
