The shoulders we stand on
This podcast traces the quest of Galeet and Danielle Dardashti to better understand their Jewish Iranian roots and the true stories of their father and grandfather, who were famous singers there before life and societal changes caused the family to leave. The series is personal, filled with precious old audio recordings of family members talking and singing, and also with interviews with people who have historical perspective and personal memories of the time, including their parents. The story is filled with the kinds of insights and warmth that give us a real feeling for the lives of Danielle and Galeet’s forebears, and so a window into them as well. We all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Most of us are or come from immigrants and the stories of those who brought us all here are precious as we seek to understand ourselves, our own lives, and our nation’s many roots in greater depth. Danielle is a great narrator as she takes us on this journey of identity and understanding, and we sense the great love this family has for one another. Galeet adds nuance and brings the music that is the lifeblood of this family in; the music at the end of each episode, from Galeet’s recording Monajat featuring her grandfather and her “singing together,” is incredibly beautiful as well.

I couldn’t stop listening to this show once I found it (via Hadassah magazine). A story that is beautiful and tragic at the same time. Amazing that the sisters found the tapes that everyone forgot about…and unraveled the family story. I never knew anything about the Iranian Jewish community- so...Read full review »
