“The Other Hand purports to be a discussion on “the intersection between politics, finance and economics”.
Jim Power made a name for himself during Ireland’s “Celtic Tiger” period. The country was drowning in credit and everybody had so much money that it gave rise to “celebrity economists” like David McWilliams and Jim Power. Alas, due to his charisma deficit Mr Power never had his own TV and radio shows, or live events like Leviathan. But, he has a great face for podcasts and here it is.
He has paired up with Chris Johns, a Labour voting former chief economist from the Valleys of Wales (!). He’s an expert on all things Brexit, except why the British want it and how Boris Johnson is so relentlessly popular.
Together, they are the Statler and Waldorf of podcasters.
In the main, Jim Power is a whinger. During Ireland’s economic collapse in 2008 he was an outspoken Fianna Fáil apologist who was adamant the economy would experience a “soft landing”. The IMF soon bailed Ireland out.
He admires the UK’s handling of Covid despite them having double Ireland’s mortality rate per capita. He bemoans his sons’ inability to buy houses here and recommends they move to London. He also thinks Waterford will win an All-Ireland hurling title. At every level his logic is flawed.
Chris Johns is a closet woke liberal. He’s so PC he’s offended and sickened by the school yard ditty “Ten German Bombers”. Yet, he fears wokism.
Each podcast takes the same format. They begin by telling us that financial forecasting is a misleading waste of time. They then proceed to make economic predictions, interspersed with rants about what a terrible place Britain is (Johns berates BoJo because of Brexit) and praise about what a wonderful place Britain is (Power cheers BoJo because of Covid). The podcast frequently ends with the “Covid Corner” where these two economists become armchair epidemiologists and drag out the podcast like a dose of Long Covid.
This is the funniest podcast on t’InterWeb. It’s more satirical than The Onion.
Sit back, peel back they layers, and you’ll be in tears.”
