Delightful!
I'm relatively new to podcasts, but this is my favorite by miles so far. The co-hosts clearly know and love their Tolkien, including his letters and minor works I've never read, and the thoughtful, deliberate pace of their readthrough is perfect for unpacking the density of the Silmarillion; the one-off episodes interviewing Tolkien scholars (and relatives!) are also fascinating. They also have great conversational chemistry, and their specialties and perspectives complement each other very well. Shawn brings wonderful linguistic insight to the text, and listening to Alan (a professional narrator/voice actor, I think?) read passages from the original and voice different characters is a particular treat—although both are excellent readers! I am a classicist and a keen but amateur Tolkien fan, and I'm learning a lot from this podcast. Highly recommended.Read full review »

Thanks for your excellent podcast, I enjoy it immensely and take every opportunity to listen. I am now on ep. 39 and happy to still have quite a few to go before I have to *wait* for new episodes 👏

Fantastic podcast!! Great for readers of Tolkien who are just starting out, or have been at it for quite a while. They make it fun and quite informative without seeming preachy as can sometimes happen. Great job guys.

I enjoy their Tolkien knowledge, humor, and interesting conversation. They don't take themselves too seriously but they take their subject matter very...Read full review »
