Great for Casual and Serious Tolkien Readers
I've always been a casual Tolkien reader at best--loved the movies, read and enjoyed Lord of the Rings, and did a bit of light reading about Tolkien during the Great War. For decades I've thought the Silmarillion was just Not For Me. Not being a super-fan, I thought it was too dense, didn't have enough narrative, and would take far too much time and effort to decipher. I was SO WRONG. This is a great book, and the density and complexity adds to the fun. However, I wouldn't be enjoying it half as much without Shawn and Alan helping unpack it chapter-by-chapter. Their pithy deconstructions help demistify the text and do a great job sorting through what's crucial plot information and what's merely an interesting aside. Meanwhile, their deep knowledge of Tolkien's world gives me an appreciation of the book that first-time readers rarely get. On top of that, it's funny! Listening feels like hanging out with a bunch of highly knowledgeable grad students playing D&D. It's both accessible and insightful. Highly recommended.Read full review »

I would appreciate a female voice and maybe someone who doesn't always agree with the other hosts. All in all I strongly recommend...Read full review »

I am binge-listening all the episodes and catching up quickly. Thank you for this cheerful place that feels a bit like actually visiting a pub in Middle Earth.
