“Sitting in a dark room, a certain number of nondescript characters facing their own crippling shortcomings the only way Americans can – through a naked and indeed unrelenting criticism of anything their intellect fails to comprehend in an all-encompassing way, floating gaily from political affairs to ghost stories, often assuming the listener is on their side of the moral and ideological fence, but also acknowledging the deep tissues of human connection, their profundity only matched by the magnitude of their temperance. Fascinatingly brittle, ant-like sounds pepper the rare silent passages.* U.S. celebrities or politicians are often mentioned, although rarely by name, making this podcast interestingly abstract for listeners who aren't familiar with American news. Often said to be indistinguishable, the hosts are anything but. I counted three: one with a very excitable delivery who literally growls, making my throat hurt out of sympathy; one with a similar voice but a more civilised speech; another with a more placid tone, sounding slightly professor-like, if still very American. There is quite obviously a low ceiling with traces of egg shell where the episodes are recorded. Birds sit silently on the windowsill, waiting for scraps. The building is packed with hawkers who have finally stopped going from door to door, having found an ideal home.
*That turned out to be a loose wire in my headphones.”
