Scott and historical fiction
Dear Dom and Tom Very much enjoying your podcast particularly the historical fiction one. Scott, whom some of us still read, was influential not just through Ivanhoe but also through The Talisman and The Betrothed. In these books he depicts the Saracens as sophisticated and civilised while the Crusaders are brutes and barbarians. This has been the established view ever since. Interestingly Sir Ridley Scott’s film ‘ Kingdom of Heaven’ when released in 2004 was attacked by academics as an unhistorical Walter Scott view. Sir Ridley acknowledged the influence of The Talisman. Also relevant is Sir Walter Scott’s response to contemporary critics set out in the introduction to The Talisman in the collected edition of 1830. Scott wrote ‘ My violation of the truth of history gave offence to Mr Mills, the author of the History of Chivalry and the Crusades, who was not, it may be presumed, aware that romantic fiction naturally includes the power of invention which is indeed one of the requisites of the art’ Ian Chisholm

More reviews of The Rest Is History
Unlike a lot of history podcasts, this is able to be both an easy listen and highly educational. Mapping the events of today onto previous events in history is a great concept. Highly recommend.
