richly inspiring but why so much emphasis on gender politics?
This is a review of 'The Art of Friendship'. It took me a long time to get through this podcast and initially I was put off by the very authoritative stance on men being men and women being women. I'm not sure it's really necessary to have very rigid ideas on how to be 'manly' or 'womanly'. That said, my husband and I enjoy a very traditional marriage and that makes us happy so who knows. Maybe it is right. However I question whether it's appropriate to make Catholicism so narrowly prescriptive when so many people are not in traditional relationships. The emphasis should be on love, not on women being submissive. Also, there was a long passage about not marrying a non Catholic because it would be hard. Well, I am married to a non Catholic andI found that difficult and frankly unrelated to the subject of friendship. Again, these are interesting opinions but rather alienating if you do not fit into a very narrow, traditional way of life. Lots of people don't. I would argue that God creates a very wide spectrum of ways to live and that's OK. I'm happy that the Hahns have such a happy marriage but maybe it's the British person in me I find it a bit much to say that theirs is the only way of being married. I think it's a pity when the message of Christianity is that if you don't obey every single rule and live you life in a traditional manner then God is not available to you. I'm not sure why the Hahns are focusing so much on this stuff. Let the world obsess about gender politics! Focus on the abundant love of God. Be welcoming to all the lost who are blundering about in darkness and do not know the message of God's enormous love. Anyway, those stumbling blocks aside, once I had finally listened to the whole podcast I found that there was some absolute gold in here about friendship, which is why I have given it 5 stars. Well worth a listen. I was challenged to rebuild a friendship with my brother, and to keep praying for those around me. Thank you.Read full review »
