“The guest (Jason Mantzoukas) kept saying it was “only a movie” over and over, as if that was a needed point of clarification. I also found it insulting that Mantzoukas was acting as if this issue of fear was childish with comments about “training wheels.” Even PJ referred to himself as a “wimp” or wimpy. It’s a disservice to those of us who want to really understand why we are likewise so affected by scary films. Many of us are not young or childish, and do understand that it is a film.
Mantzoukas also tailored his comments like he thought listeners needed to be educated on what filmmaking and films are, when this podcast rather could go into the interesting territory of the space where storytelling affects PJ and others so thoroughly and corporally. I hope future episodes stay away from the hazing aspect, and step back to consider, why does Alex feel unaffected, or at least relaxed by horror films? Is that perhaps something interesting to explore? Why are we assuming Alex is right and PJ just needs to become the same through force? or at least, what is happening differently to their psyches? I think gender is going to be an element to a lot of horror films too, and I am staying tuned to how you better handle that, rather than ignore it. I was so interested to hear on ReplyAll that PJ had similar scary-movie fears, which I had started to believe were connected for me to the warnings issued to females through films via sexual assaults et al.”
