“This show provides very good and diverse information and generally has interesting and knowledgeable guests. The gardening episodes are especially good. The best part of the show is the realistic approach Jack takes. Many in the survivalist community are driven by conspiratorial nuttiness or apocalyptic fears (or desires!). That's not present here, though. Jack's underlying ethos is one of living a good life and building capacity, resilience, and independence so that the needed resources are not only in place when the SHTF situations inevitably come but are part of daily life.
The quibbles:
Jack's voice. I hate to make such a complaint (forgive me Jack) but the tight nasal quality of his voice really grates on the nerves after a while, and that "after a while" becomes a shorter and shorter period the more episodes you've listened to. The show would be greatly improved if Jack invested in some lessons with a pro and trained to improve his speaking voice.
The talk/sports radio rant mode. I suppose this type of show may not be possible without this--and the fanboys seem to like it--but if you're just here for info you may (like me) find it annoying.
Jack's politics are fundamentally confused. Jack does a very good job of presenting the beauty--and practicality--of a way of life framed by true liberty: yeomanry (the right and duty to have the ability, means, and freedom to provide for yourself and for your family); communitarianism (neighborliness and recognizing your need for and responsibility to good neighbors and the love of and loyalty to your place, people, and traditions); and conservationism (the building, maintenance, and protection of sustainable systems of productive capacity and ways of living). That's all very well and good and much needed in the midst of the self-destructive craziness of American culture and politics and I very much appreciate what Jack has to say on the topics and the information he puts out that helps to make it more feasible. But while pushing for these things, Jack at the same time is advocating for the individualistic libertarian ideology that has done more than any other ideology (in America) to destroy liberty. He's working at cross-purposes on the political front. On the one hand, helping people to live actual lives of liberty; on the other, advocating for a political ideology that (ironically, given its claimed values) unavoidably results in the abandonment of responsibility by individuals, the concentration of political and economic power in fewer and fewer hands, the expansion of law and regulation, and the enlargement of the State.”Read full review »
