“I’ve been listening to The Tome Show for about two months now. The podcast covers a lot of D&D related topics: current news, rules discussion, interviews, computer games, and probably a few more that have slipped my mind. All the contributors pull their own weight but in particular I really enjoy “Appendix N”, the book review segment. It has led me to a few books that I would never have come across otherwise.
In one sense the podcast is different than all the others that I listen to; it’s actually a collection of contributors under one umbrella and one basic theme. The different hosts/segments are not put together into one episode but rather are released as (shorter) stand alone shows. The result is that there is a lot of content produced – usually something new every two or three days. Unusual, but I like it.
It annoys me when a reviewer gives a podcast a poor rating due to the opinions that the hosts express, or they are not interested in the topics discussed, or something similar. I think the podcast deserves a 5 star rating for a few reasons. The sound quality is always good, the hosts know what they are talking about and stay on topic, and they do a good job editing before release. It sounds like you are listening to an over-the-air radio show. Unlike the radio there are very few commercials. (Commercials are an acceptable part of podcasting but they separate the good from the great) Also mentioned above there is a constant stream of content to listen to, so if something doesn’t interest you it’s a good bet that in the next few days something will.
The only downside that I can think of is that because there are so many different hosts it is difficult to remember them and/or tell them apart.
Also, for the record, their sponsor Noble Knight Games has a beautiful brick and mortar store in Janesville, WI. The pictures they posted on the website don’t do it justice. It’s a nice place to shop - bright, clean, and it looks more like a house on the inside than a commercial store. Selection of products rivals every other store I’ve been to. I highly recommend stopping in if you can.”
