Practice What You Preach, No?
While I TRULY don’t doubt that all involved have wonderful intentions, I found it interesting (and I dare say a bit hypocritical) that the show is filmed in Iceland NOT IN ALASKA. For all the talk of supporting Indigenous voices and talent, it seems that HBO and the show’s execs opted for the comfort, convenience, and cosmopolitan-ness of filming outside Reykjavik (according to episode 1 of this very podcast). I understand there are financial gods to serve - old, hard gods no doubt ;) - but wouldn’t it have been preferable to give more local Alaskans the experience of witnessing and participating in filmmaking of this caliber and scale? This is the stuff dreams are made of. Literally. Maybe it’s just not possible but there’s A LOT of lip service in this episode to exactly this issue and it grated me. The podcast itself is okay and I’m psyched for the season. Hoping it’s deep, weird, and audacious.
