Brain candy
I listen to a lot of history podcasts while driving, and Interesting Times has quickly become one of my favorites. Joe always presents stories entertainingly. A lot of the episodes are about things I knew a bit about (Nellie Bly, Mansa Musa), but Joe covers new angles, and what was one-dimensional in my mind becomes fleshed out (in sometimes surprising ways — I knew about Mansa Musa’s gold wealth but had no idea that he flooded the gold market in Cairo… by accident). Other times, the topic is completely new to me, and I wonder how I could never have heard of it before (the Tulsa Race Riot, seriously?). I look forward to getting the newest episode every Thursday.
