“The readings are adequate. I’d say better than Libravox but not as good as other podcast readers, so I’m not excited by the reading. Most if it is flat, with little emotion or pacing. The speed of reading is always the same, there is some inflection, but not much to create audible interest. Dramatic readings are difficult because it requires the ability to verbally act, not simply pronunciation peppered with some emphasis.
The stories are well known to fans of horror and the macabre, despite the repeated insistence of the reader. They are good or bad, depending on your tastes, but hardly “niche”.
All this is to say that any annoyance becomes impossible to ignore or tolerate because the reward for doing so isn’t much. My biggest annoyance is the long, often preaching, commentary before AND after the reading. I don’t care about a reader’s personal politics or how they feel about current events or their dissatisfaction with society. I’m not listening to a podcast reading of fiction to hear about how a complete stranger feels about... whatever. Sure, I can waste time fast forwarding until I hit some actual reading, but it’s way more work than I want to do. People like the auto-play feature of podcasts for a reason.
The reader doesn’t even give the courtesy of a concise, prepared statement. They are rambling, off the cuff personal thoughts and preachy advice that you just aren’t sure will end. If I wanted to waste my time listening to someone’s opinion, I’d listen to talk radio.”
