“I think some regulars on Nathan Rabin's Happy Place website mentioned this podcast, so I downloaded an episode or two just to give it a listen. As a middle-aged film nerd who went to film school in the Distant Mists of the 1970s (back when Coppola, Scorcese, Spielberg et al were Fresh Young Talents!), I often find film podcasts, particularly by younger podcasters, to be depressingly ahistorical and more about snark than knowledge and critical evaluation. So it's with great pleasure that I say this podcast, while hardly snark-free, is both exceedingly knowledgeable about film history and smart in its critical evaluations.
The podcast is what it say on the tin - it's about movies everybody thought would win major Academy Awards before release, but which failed to generate any such nominations come the Spring. Mostly it's because, like PAY IT FORWARD (ep. 3) or HYDE PARK ON HUDSON (ep. 10), the resulting movies are Just Plain Awful - but sometimes it's because the movie's released at the wrong time, like COURAGE UNDER FIRE (ep. 5), or was successful but made The Wrong Kind of Money, like DOUBLE JEOPARDY (ep. 8). And...sometimes, it's because the actresses, actors, writers or directors ran afoul of sexual predators like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, or James Toback - which the show addresses but doesn't dwell on.
