Portraying women in History | Lesley Smith Interview | 2021

Description
Lesley Smith has been the Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire since 2000. Lesley is well known for her highly entertaining and informative costumed portrayals of a variety of historical characters. I’ve had the privilege of seeing Lesley’s portrayals of Mary, Queen of Scots at Tutbury Castle as part of my 2019 Executed Queens tour and in January 2020 I was at Peterborough Cathedral for her first performance of Katherine of Aragon. I think what Lesley does is completely unique. Her portrayal of women in history, dressed as they would have been, is not a reenactment, rather she brings these women to life through her monologues and it’s as if they are standing there talking to you. Lesley kindly agreed to join me and answer questions about the women she portrays and how she prepares her characters. You can also watch this episode on YouTube.
