“This top-notch podcast explores the fascinating world of viruses, both their basic biology and role in disease. Racaniello and colleagues do an excellent job of making the latest developments in virus research accessible to a lay and professional listeners alike. Topics are often very timely (e.g. coverage of the swine flu pandemic etc) but also extremely varied. We learn about seemingly obscure plant viruses, the pros and cons of vaccination, how viruses evolve and where pathogenic viruses come from. Time and time again the discussion centers upon an example of how basic studies of a viral problem can lead to a major new discovery about biological systems in general. Guests are invariably leading thinkers in some area of virology or immunology and their perspective is valuable. Nowadays, too much bandwidth is given over to talking heads expressing opinions without much knowledge, but on TWIV you listen to actual experts engaged in frontline research and scholarship.
