This was my childhood.
I was 1 in 1989 when this podcast starts. My dad drove lumber trucks on Oregon. It is super interesting hearing all of this as an adult. I heard snippets as a kid and I remember some but not in this much detail. This issue had a major impact on my family, friends, community and schools and it is nice to hear it told in a complex way. The Mill city episode hits close to home both literary and figuratively. Both my parents were from Oregon and I grew up in various Oregon communities. All of this was in the background as I grew up, at first seeing how my parents could buy a house, then property, all on my dad’s salary working in the lumber industry, then seeing my Dad lose jobs and eventually going into a different industry. I think this was the major stressor in my parents marriage and eventual divorce. In high school the Oregon community I was living in was dying. It once had multiple mills that all closed. No jobs. People left. Schools closed. I was bussed to the next town because the local schools all closed. Then my jr. high building closed, kids were constantly leaving and by the time I graduated my class size was less than 60. Thanks for such great reporting on such a complex issue.

Lynn Agree that lack of Native Voices is disappointing. Perhaps a future episode could bring us this important information.

This story reverberates all the way to right now and the divisions we currently feel in this country. But it’s not just a story of doom and gloom because despite so many missteps we do still have both logging and old growth forests in the American West. Really well researched and thoughtful,...Read full review »
