“I was 1 in 1989 when this podcast starts. My dad drove lumber trucks on Oregon.
It is super interesting hearing all of this as an adult. I heard snippets as a kid and I remember some but not in this much detail. This issue had a major impact on my family, friends, community and schools and it is nice to hear it told in a complex way. The Mill city episode hits close to home both literary and figuratively.
Both my parents were from Oregon and I grew up in various Oregon communities. All of this was in the background as I grew up, at first seeing how my parents could buy a house, then property, all on my dad’s salary working in the lumber industry, then seeing my Dad lose jobs and eventually going into a different industry. I think this was the major stressor in my parents marriage and eventual divorce. In high school the Oregon community I was living in was dying. It once had multiple mills that all closed. No jobs. People left. Schools closed. I was bussed to the next town because the local schools all closed. Then my jr. high building closed, kids were constantly leaving and by the time I graduated my class size was less than 60.
Thanks for such great reporting on such a complex issue.”
