“I met Neil when he was a music journalist at the New York Times, covering a band I was managing. Having interacted with many notable music journalists by then, he didn’t particularly stand out, aside from his honesty and wordcraft.
The next time I saw him was after he finished the title he’s probably most known for, “The Game.” He’d definitively changed his own game at that point. Flush with swagger, he was most interestingly also very introspective - to the point that almost contradicted the personae the media had created about him. He was weighing the pros and cons of a serious relationship against the fast-lane, Hollywood-tinged adventure in which he was immersed.
This led to “The Truth,” where he laid his heart out for all to see, delving into the hard realities of relationships that are seldom communicated, most rarely by men.
He invited me to dinner as he was just starting to explore the elements that would become this podcast. He was all-consumed with the real-life details of this mystery, and his passion was palpable as he was struggling to determine if, or how far, he should dip his toe in.
The result is here, and it’s nothing short of spectacular. Self-narrated, well-paced and with a stunning score, Neil has created a cinematic masterpiece that places the listener in the middle of the action, as the story unfolds and deepens.
In a world where podcasts are quickly maturing to provide a high-quality audio experience akin to the best Netflix/Showtime/HBO docs, “To Live And Die In LA” rises to the top!”
