“Man, where to start. This pod is a real piece of work. These guys latch onto something that may start out somewhat funny...and then they beat it to death with a 9-iron until it looks like Robert Allenby's face after an "abduction". I attempted to recreate one of Tron's tired gimmicks and re-listen to the broadcast with an eye towards pointing out areas for improvement. To Tron's credit, CBS's live golf shots per hour is low. However, my pen ran out of ink in the first 15 minutes as I was checking off "vibin" references, harsh goatees, ambient club jams...just non-stop re-fluffing. Near the end, Neil (wisely) attempted to steer reviews to focus on Tron and Big Randy. He probably sensed how his performance was gonna play on tape, and tried to dodge the upcoming onslaught. Tron must have been tough on the kid growing up, because Neil clearly has a bit of a "little-brother" thing going on that he's trying his damndest to overcome. Whether its cringe-worthy impressions of XS bouncers, or absurd pronunciations of the word "chateau", I wanted to go full Monty after just a few minutes and tell Neil to go f*** himself. For being a co-founder of a golf "lifestyle brand", he can't compose himself around tour pros, and apparently frequently compliments poor shots/rounds. "Jye-roh?" Sweeper? C'mon man, be better. Neil does redeem himself a couple times when Tron shows a completely lack of awareness. Prying into Montana's story? Chatting it up at the spa? No chill. Leave it alone, Tron. And wear longer pants. Are we supposed to be impressed you have a tailor for your Lululemon? We get it, you're a big-shot "hotelier", whatever the f*** that is. Big Randy, despite his implied stature, flies under the radar as usual. Just kinda there. Whatever.
Seriously though, love the podcast. I know Soly got all the pub for his string of Q4 guests, but I've come to enjoy the roundtable-style bullshitting pods as much as the "serious" ones. Neil brings the fresh gear, and must be the brains of the NLU operation. Tron brings the steel-beam melting takes, and is the trapper of the group. Big Randy brings, well I'm still not exactly sure what he brings specifically, but I can dig his chill vibe and honest assessment of his golf game. Recommend.
p.s. Neil, sorry, didn't mean to go quite so deep on you here. You just talked a lot more in Ep. 5 and I was too lazy to go back and dig up more material.”Read full review »
