Bathurst, beers n basketball
I happened upon the Nightshift at the start of the pandemic, when Adam Shand was in the chair, sitting in for Luke. I have been a listener ever since. The Nightshift can be very funny. Luke litters his program with clever little lines, such as referring to dawn as "sparrow's fart", and referring to his wife as the "Minister of War and Finance". Luke handles his callers with aplomb mostly, and often finds humour in unexpected areas. I think Luke is at his most funny during the Friday morning Man Cave segment, or when bantering with the Nightshift's producer, Thomas. The Nightshift can be serious. I think Luke comes across as a very honest, empathetic and thoughtful broadcaster. Luke often has callers phoning in who are in difficult circumstances. Luke cannot do anything personally for these individuals, other than air their stories and "hear" their concerns. Luke will sometimes encourage his "Nightshift family" to ring in with suggestions, or connect these individuals with the pastor (whose name escapes me now). Luke is very strong on his admiration of, and connection with, Australia's servicemen and women; he is passionate about Australia's returned war veterans, evident in his support for RunArmy and advocacy for informal recognition of Anzac Day in the suburbs early on in the pandemic. I very much enjoyed the trucking segment on Valentine's Day 2023 when some callers expressed how they juggled their work lives away from home with the home lives; it was nice to hear the truckies speak warmly about their wives or girlfriends, and kids. Luke and The Nightshift deserve credit for encouraging men to speak well of their families and to ensure listeners get to hear what the home life of a truckie or truckette might be like The Nightshift can be informative. Rod Hannifey deserves credit for regular appearances on the Nightshift, which can be funny and informative. I believe all Australians could benefit from hearing what Rod has to say. He is a cogent advocate for the road transport industry and Nightshift does a service to all Australians for airing the issues relating to road transport. Other guests such as Kaylene Wynn, Michael Carr-Gregg, Keith Suter, Karl Kruszelnicki, Beth Moore and Dr Phillip Norrie add to the Nightshift's varied content. The Nightshift certainly does have a knowledgeable listenership and i think Luke and co. are skilled at weeding out the fantasists and nutters. I vaguely remember a national overnight programme on the ABC; i remember that programme as being very good-natured, gentle and harmless; almost to the point of being innocuous. I like how Luke will feature difficult or controversial topics on the Nightshift and give callers a chance to weigh in. The discussion is robust and respectful and doesn’t shy away from controversy Luke is also clear that he takes people at face value; for example, when a man phones in and claims to have been wronged in the Family Court, Luke is clear that he takes the caller at face value. No doubt most of the Nightshift's listeners are male; I don't hear any woman phoning in to say that she has been wronged. I have a lot more sympathy with women on that subject matter. Why would women phone in anyway? They wouldn't have time, because the women are most likely asleep when their kids are asleep and don't have the luxury of being awake at night listening to the radio and phoning in to air their grievances. I don't know enough about advertising to say much about Luke's advertising of Swift Gro, or Nature Bee or Aussie Hoses. But i believe that Luke would well know his listeners and his advertisers and what will work and what won't. Luke exudes confidence and certainty in his advertising of these products. I don't enjoy the frequency of the ad reads; I am probably at peak Swift Gro and peak Nature Bee. Any further segments on those products might be too much for my liking, I do find it odd that the Nightshift features individuals from the real estate industry who appear to be on the comfortable end of the income spectrum. There is often talk of weekend auctions and the spectacular prices of homes; but many of Luke's callers and listeners are not wealthy and cant even find anywhere to rent. The Nightshift does seem very close to the real estate industry. Credit must be given to former producers Jess Issa, Nicki, and now Thomas. It seems as if Thomas is now the permanent producer of The Nightshift, Thomas. I do hope Thomas will keep up his participation because Luke can be at his most funny when he has a bit part player with him. Well done, The Nightshift, for encouraging men to talk Well done for your unwavering support of returned service people Just finally, i irks me that i cannot listen live on my phone anymore. The Listnr app *cannot be downloaded outside of Australia*, unless you have a VPN; this means that an ex-pat like me cannot listen live unless i’m sitting at home. When I discovered the Nightshift, i could listen on my phone. People phoned in from Italy, London, Croatia, the USA and Canada. I have noticed that there seem to be fewer callers from outside of Australia in 2022, and just a handful so far from the US in 2023. I believe this inability to download the Listnr app to a mobile device outside of Australia to be a contributor to the decline of expats phoning in the Nightshift one more thing .... my review title ... Beers, basketball and Bathurst. Try listening to the Nightshift podcast for a whole week. Draw up a bingo card with beer/basketball/Bathurst on the card. You will be shouting bingo by the second night. Luke is very big on Bathurst; he loves his basketball; and beer is never far from the conversation Apple podcasts rating don't allow for half-or quarter stars. Nothing is perfect; but the Nightshift is a millimetre off five stars in my opinion, so five stars it isRead full review »

Why spoil a good show with such a poorly edited podcast? Sometimes the podcast is not available at all. For those that cannot listen at night, the podcast is very important. The show could have a much larger audience if the podcast was done better and on time. Opportunity wasted. Shame.
