“It all started so well, but then the show lost James Richardson and with it a lot of its energy.
Next there is the credulous acceptance of movie industry PR BS. Yeah, Tom Cruise really performed all those stunts in MI. Believe that and you’ll believe anything, but at least you wouldn’t be alone. The reviewers on this podcast did too and, in doing so, undermined their credibility. In fact, the ‘stunts’ are more a tribute to great VFX and classic movie-making techniques than anything else. TC might have broken his ankle but his life was at less risk than your average charity parachute jumper.
Finally, the latest episode (68) has a log-rolling interview with Bart Layton in which he claims to have invented a new form of documentary. I’m not sure what is more worrying: his lack of awareness of film history (and arrogance) or the interviewer’s similar shallow knowledge and/or unwillingness to challenge the assertion. Anyhow, it again undercuts this podcast’s credibility. I hope Layton goes to Sheffield Doc Fest and repeats that statement. Considering the city was the home of Touching the Void’s Joe Simpson, a local hero, he might be run out of town tarred-and-feathered.”
