Excellent
White public-school educated men will always be the first to get their voices heard and so it always means a lot when they use their platform to amplify other voices. O’Brien is one of the powerful podcast voices renegotiating masculinity and other identities through podcasting, grappling with cultural complexity in thoughtful and sensitive ways with the tools he has at his disposal. The series to date is a fascinating set of conversations with guests representing many of the protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010, although lacking in older women (it’s noticeable that he’s interviewed several men older than himself but no older women, a common tendency in popular male podcasters). He gives the impression that his considerable intelligence could do with taking out for a run: maybe it’s time to follow Russell Brand’s lead and start his MA in identity studies? It would be nice to think that the people reframing our cultural conversation were adequately trained for the task... This sounds a bit mealymouthed, so it must be reiterated that I adore this podcast and have gulped it down insatiably.
