From a White Woman in Alabama
I’m just down highway 110 from Mt. Meigs and had no idea of this history. I drive thru it on my way into Montgomery and after following this podcast I get chills now passing thru on my way to Montgomery. I’ve been asking family and older friends who were around during the time if they knew of Mt. Meigs back then.. most of the white people I ask don’t know much but the older black ones they know… I remember being in a majority black classroom in sixth grade with a black Science teacher, Mrs. Hunter who would tell the trouble making kids “They gonna send you to Mt. Meigs”. That’s the extent of what I had heard about it until this. My information has been heavily white washed as I grew up white in Alabama. My partner is black and we have a child here In this state and the weight of the things that happened here weighs heavily on me quite often. Thank you for choosing to give this story a voice!!
