Gurrrl …. W T F
This review is based on the first 2 episodes released and is up to date. I thought this would be an expose about meditation. Madison says that she doesn’t know anything about meditation, yet she makes no attempt to understand what meditation actually is. There are several types of meditation techniques. I think, it would have been useful for her to have covered this. The podcasts begins with Goenka (Vipassana Meditation technique) being a cult. But by episode 2, ALL meditation is equated to a strong drug with side effects. To make such a claim, there should be some evidence. Just speaking to an expert from Brown University who has an agenda against meditation isn’t good enough. For the expert to claim that ‘victims of meditation’ having underlying issues or pre-existing conditions isn’t a good enough reason that the meditation instructors didn’t spot the warning signs and did nothing about it. There were some good points too that meditation should be tailor made to the individual. This is very true and important. But then to claim that apps like Headspace and Calm can induce psychosis in some people, this analysis is insane. The general claims that meditation being a scam isn’t provocative, as it isn’t seen as harmful. But to claim that ALL MEDITATION is as DAMAGING AS STRONG DRUGS to people. I think this needs to be backed up by verified evidence. You cannot take a handful of people, practising one type of meditation and having a bad experience, as evidence for all meditation. By the second episode, I also wasn’t sure if this podcast was a parody or a weird promotion of meditation. Anyone knows, that meditating is to focus on being in the present and stilling the mind. The advanced version is to leave the body and to have an out of body experience and observe. So for this podcast to complain and make it seem like a scary outcome of the very thing you want to achieve from meditation is what I found weird. Episode 1 was reasonable, I thought that they meant that the Emily was induced with drugs to meditate … to have such a bad reaction. No, it was just a person with an addictive personality, addicted to meditation. Episode 2 looks at Emily’s twin sister Sarah who then turns into a murderous, suicidal possessed demon … because of meditation 🙄

More reviews of Untold: The Retreat
The stories told in this series are upsetting and I hope the people are able to get the help and support they need. I’ve not been on one of the mentioned retreats, so can’t comment on whether it is a ‘cult’ but it is outrageously sloppy to conflate all meditation with one single organisation....Read full review »

I’m far from a meditation stan, but agree this podcast series just feels unnecessary. The stories, whilst heartbreaking, could have been told in one episode, with a focus on mental health safeguarding issues. The series, with its long pauses and unnecessary music, just feels bloated and like it’s...Read full review »

The lived experiences of the people in this podcast are incredibly sad. Without denying or taking away from those, this podcast is full of factual inaccuracies about vipassana and is incredibly one sided. Sensationalised to the max. Poor journalism.
