“From the outset this came across as a desperate attempt to shoehorn Vipassana meditation into the box of “cult”. Attending a retreat costs nothing, it’s purely donation only - if you feel like paying for ten days’ accommodation and food. No one chats to you unless you speak to teachers, no one takes your details or asks you to come back. It’s a very anonymous process where you slip in and slip out, taking what you need or rejecting it if it serves no purpose. I’ve attended a ten-day sit and the website is very clear about the hours and what is required in terms of noble silence and handing in phones, books and writing materials at the start.
That Marriage only interviews 24 people over a year is barely representative of the average experience of a sitter. There are often 100 or more attendees at every retreat around the world.
Moreover the interviewees are all white westerners from Australia, the US, and Europe. Perhaps the later episodes will include people from India, Sri Lanka, China, Hong Kong or Malaysia but it doesn’t seem angled that way.
In any undertaking there will always be a tiny percentage who suffer injuries or mental health problems - but to try and suggest this is a dangerous cult is deeply disingenuous.”
